Meet Barney! Remember the warm days of summer? Well, that's when we met this special guy, and he has been warming hearts ever since. Found on his own, Barney was in very rough shape. An affible hound dog, Barney was just glad to be among friends. Weighing in at a mere 26 pounds, Barney was severely underweight. He seemed to not be able to process his food and eventually required an operation to remove a polyp. His post-operative course was complicated by infection and Barney was a trooper throughout some very rough days. He has been able to gain close to 50 % of his body weight, but despite a healthy appetite, he remains very thin. Barney has been under close supervision of a vet and has been making slow but steady progress and has normal activity. He will need moitoring of his weight, but may always be a thin dog that requires a coat in winter and a warm bed to sleep in. Barney likes his human company and would do best if not left alone for long periods. He has been known to get in a little mischief! He likes to try to be top dog, but seems to work things out after a bit. Barney does ok with cats, but is learning to ignore the fact that they can go in high places when he can't.
Barney would do best with an owner that is patient and can help him adjust to a permanent home. Hound dogs make wonderful family pets and do well with people of all ages. Potential owners will have to watch his diet closely and watch that he stays out of other animals' and people food( yes, Barney is adept at stealing food!).
Barney has truly soleful eyes that just beg for attention. He has had an uphill battle these past 6 months, and he is anxious for an easy life. If you would like to meet Barney, please call to speak directly with our adoption counselor.
